Although strictly speaking, the Lusophone world consists of all of the states in which Portuguese is the language, in reality this vast community of over 200 million people around the world encompasses a wide variety of cultures. The identity of each one of these cultures has been shaped by rich exchanges and an eventful history, all of which has been reflected in their music. Combining past and present and alternating returning artists with newcomers, the 2025 edition of the festival atlântico is once again set to welcome the cream of the current music scene.
We begin with Portugal and the emotionally charged voice of Gisela João, a young singer with a magnetic presence, followed by an evening of jazz that mixes musicians from both Lisbon and Luxembourg. Then we head off to Brazil, with two artists in their thirties who are each breaking new ground in their own way: first Leo Middea, with his delectable blend of soul and bossa nova, and then Bia Ferreira, a songwriter, composer and singer whose lyrics are a powerful expression of her commitment to the fight against discrimination.
Finally, we will be stopping off in Cape Verde for an evening that will begin with Carmen Souza exploring the history of the archipelago with a project that combines jazz and Creole music. She will be followed by Mayra Andrade who, after her memorable performance at the very first edition of the festival in 2016, will revisit her repertoire of almost two decades with guitar and voice. And as usual, children will have plenty to enjoy: from a very young age they will be able to participate in exciting workshops and attend fascinating shows, including one on a Portuguese fairytale with a golden shellfish.
