Anyone who has met United Instruments of Lucilin, Luxembourg’s specialist ensemble for current music, would not believe that the idea of New Music being weird-sounding, overly intellectual, somehow dark or totally silly is still widespread. For many years, United Instruments of Lucilin have devoted intense and profound labour to expressions of the colourful diversity of music today. This concept also characterizes the three concerts of Lucilin’s series at the Philharmonie: three different approaches in two different halls – indeed the Salle de Musique de Chambre will be used in two very different configurations, once as a classical concert hall and once as a place where acoustic instruments meet live electronics.
Accustomed to being the driving force not only in interpreting music, but also in its creation, the ensemble has commissioned and premiered innumerable works over the years, incorporating them into its repertoire. Each of its concerts at the Philharmonie focuses on the world premiere of a commissioned work – one of them created by the young composer Mirela Ivičević, who lives in Austria and uses sound samples in her works, creating ever-new sonic worlds which are both sensuous and filled with tension. Sina Fallahzadeh, an Iranian
composer whose sensitive explorations of Persian poetry unite very different sonic worlds and cultural backgrounds, is writing a piece for a rather classical ensemble instrumentation and the soprano Donatienne Michel-Dansac, whose performance of Ligeti with Lucilin at the Philharmonie in February 2023 caused quite a stir.
United Instruments of Lucilin also promises an immersive concert experience towards the season’s end at the Espace Découverte – for which it has commissioned a piece from the Mongolian-born composer Yang Song, whose work includes traditional overtone chants from Central Asia.
All the world premieres will be embedded within a concert dramaturgy reflecting the diversity of sonic languages in the music of today. Each of the concerts will be followed by an Artist Talk.
