Music Today and in the Future

Minister of Culture
The most important location for music in the Grand Duchy, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, offers a 2023/24 season programme true to its self-proclaimed values of excellence and diversity. The protagonists of the programme are artists of the highest professionalism, but also amateur musicians. They are either from the Greater Region itself, or come to Luxembourg from all the corners of the world.
The Luxembourg Philharmonic continues the celebrations of its 90-year anniversary. It is an extraordinary asset in the cultural representation of our country abroad, continuing to forge its unique sound under the leadership of its eighth general music director, Gustavo Gimeno, and in collaboration with guest conductors and renowned soloists. At the Philharmonie, prestige and artistic quality are joined together every day, yet the resulting union is in no way elitist. The Philharmonie is a place of encounters for everyone, regardless of age or background; no prior knowledge is required to pass through its doors. Nor does it hesitate to open them to innovative projects which are popular in the best of senses, especially projects supported by the EME Foundation. The Familljefestivals for a young audience, for example, which proved a big attraction last season, now enter a second round. Finally, such an institution cannot and must not be run without taking on greater social and ecological responsibility, both for its staff and internal processes and for the organisation of its events and programme development. Encouraged by its international relationships with the world’s leading artists, with large and small music institutions –especially within the ECHO network (European Concert Hall Organisation), of which it is a member – the Philharmonie Luxembourg is determined to strive for a sustainable musical future, enabling it to bring you, dear concertgoers, the best music has to offer, for many years to come.
«For each beginning bears a special magic that nurtures living and bestows protection.»
Hermann Hesse
Change, transformation, development… human progress over the course of a lifetime is what Hermann Hesse celebrates in his poem «Stufen» (Steps), describing the joy of innovation as humanity’s original impetus, and the enjoyment derived from remembering this power. Not clinging dogmatically to the past, but entering new spaces with optimism – this is what makes life worthwhile. «We’ll walk from space to space in glad progression and should not cling to one as homestead for us. The cosmic spirit will not bind nor bore us; It lifts and widens us in ev’ry session.» Hermann Hesse wrote his poem in 1941, in times that were difficult for him personally and for society, having realised that it was impossible to return at will to any specific point in time. Waxing and waning, ebb and flow characterise our society. After the pandemic and its many limitations, which have held us in thrall far longer than we could ever have imagined, and faced now with a war in the middle of Europe, surely everyone feels a certain insecurity. These are experiences we bear with us, and from which we will learn. At this moment in time, however, we are all the more delighted to join hands, going with the times and delving into lots of new beginnings, with you. This «Musical Diary» of our 2023/24 season programme offers not only familiar names and faces, not only a younger, fresher corporate design, the festival rainy days under new leadership of composer Catherine Kontz, but also new subscription series and, most importantly, new formats giving you greater flexibility and addressing a broader range of interests. Join us to discover the novelty within the familiar, and the familiar within the novelty!
