Orchestre Place de l’Europe
Interview with Benjamin Schäfer
How has the orchestra developed since it was founded in 2021?
Definitely in the right direction! It now sounds broader and deeper and I notice that the musicians are much more confident than at our beginnings. What has also developed is how we communicate, i.e. how we detach ourselves from the sheet music, connect with each other, and work to produce the best sound without hiding. This is what «orchestra culture» is about.
Does this mean that the orchestra has now become an even closer-knit community?
Absolutely! It’s not just about playing the right notes, but also about enjoying rehearsals and making friends. In a civic orchestra, people who would maybe otherwise never meet in everyday life come together. After 8-10 hours of work, they all gather to switch off and cultivate the same passion.
For a professional musician like you, what does it mean to work with amateurs?
I’m always amazed at how much love they have - perhaps even more than us professionals! There is a great fire in their hearts. I find it very inspiring what people can achieve with practice and hard work, and I’m impressed by the high level they reach with just one rehearsal a week. Music really is their lifeblood!
As musical director, how do you curate the orchestra’s repertoire?
My main task is to find a large-scale classical piece for symphony orchestra. At the same time, it’s also good to experiment, as we did with Tan Dun in the 2023/24 season. A civic orchestra must allow the musicians to develop artistically and grow beyond their limits.
